Question:

How do I combine two shapes into one?

Answer:

You can combine overlapping shapes using the Pathfinder tool, located in the dropdown menu under the Window tab in the top menu bar. In the Pathfinder pop-up box, you will see two sections: Shape Modes, meant to create new shapes by adding or excluding, and Pathfinders, meant to divide existing shapes into new ones. The first and last choices under Shape Modes--Unite and Exclude--will join your two shapes, but Exclude will cut out their intersecting space.

Question:

How can I create a page in InDesign with multiple columns of text?

Answer:

There is more than one way to create multiple columns with InDesign. The first is to select the Layout tab from the top menu bar, and select the Margins & Columns button from its dropdown menu. The following pop-up box will allow you to adjust the number of columns, as well as the margin (area around the page) and gutter (area in between columns). Select the Text Box icon, which shows a capital-letter T, from the left toolbar and make a text box in each column. You can also make a single text box and adjust its number of columns, making sure it is selected. Click your selection with two fingers if on a Macbook and right-click the selection if you are using another laptop or PC. From that sidebar menu, select Text Frame Options and adjust its number of columns/gutter measurement in the pop-up box.
