How can you stay focused when studying for long periods of time?
I am currently studying for my MCAT, and I probably spend about 4-6 hours a day working on practice problems for it. I listen to music through my phone, but I put my phone behind me so I don't get distracted by incoming texts. I find that taking small breaks (10-15 mins) every hour of studying helps me stay focused and motivated during long sessions. I change up the kinds of questions I go over so I don't get bored by focusing on the same subject. I also reward myself at the end of the day by talking to my friends or watching a movie to prevent burn out and end my session with a positive experience.
Why does it take so long to boil a pot of water?
Liquid water contains lots of hydrogen bonds between its molecules. Hydrogen bonds are relatively weak on their own, but in large quantities, they are very strong. It takes a lot of heat energy to break these hydrogen bonds. As a result, water has a relatively high specific heat. When individual water molecules gain enough heat energy, they break those hydrogen bonds and undergo a change from liquid to steam.
How can a virus promote the development of cancer in an infected individual?
Viruses are sequences of nucleic acids that code for proteins. They do not possess the machinery that's necessary to produce their proteins, so they infect cells to use their protein-making enzymes. Some viruses may code for transcription factors that block tumor-suppressing genes. For example, HTLV1 produces an oncoprotein that suppresses the expression of the p53 gene, leading to uncontrolled cell division and cancer formation. Retroviruses can also integrate into areas of the genome that disrupt cell division genes, causing uncontrolled cell division and leading to cancer.
