Answer:

The purpose of a thesis statement is to provide readers with a guide to the essay. Answering the “what,” the “how,” and the “why” or “so what” of an essay, a thesis statement indicates purpose and provides direction. A strong thesis statement states the intent, theme, and content of an essay.

Question:

How does socioeconomic status impact the education system in the United States?

Answer:

Founded on the idea of meritocracy, the United States claims to be a country in which every individual can succeed with hard work. However, systems of power often dictate who succeeds in the United States, granting power, control, and resources to certain groups over others. With low social mobility rates, individuals in need are not receiving the resources they need to achieve their “American Dream.” The education system in particular has a tremendous impact on individuals throughout the nation. Though the United States preaches equality for all, major gaps in educational opportunities exist between students from various backgrounds, namely socioeconomic status. In many ways, children from affluent communities are set up for success, while children from struggling communities are left to attend underfunded schools. Diminished educational opportunities throughout childhood often leads to long- term consequences, as these individuals are less likely to attend college and secure stable jobs as adults, perpetuating the widening of the gap between rich and poor.
