Question:

Answer:

Question:

What is the significance of the movies that Molina narrates to Valentin in Manuel Puig's "The Kiss of the Spider Woman"?

Answer:

Molina utilizes his narration of movies as a way to attract Valentin's attention and interest. He often attempts to stop the narration at a cliff-hanger, leaving Valentin thinking about the story and therefore Molina for more time. When Molina is happy with Valentin, he tells the story of a movie that he thinks Valentin will like; when Molina is upset with Valentin, he refuses to narrate anything aloud, opting to instead tell the movie to himself only as a stream of consciousness. The movies also are symbolic of the relationship between Molina and Valentin. All of the movies revolve around love stories, and in most of them the protagonist dies as a sacrificial act for her lover. Therefore the movie plots and narration done by Molina serve to foreshadow Molina's fate and the sacrifice that Molina makes at the end of the novel.

Question:

Suppose there is a simultaneous Fed sale of bonds and an increase in the tax rate by the government. What result does this have on interest rates and investment?

Inactive
Kristen M.
Answer:

By selling bonds, the Fed is lowering the money supply, and therefore pursuing contractionary monetary policy; by increasing the tax rate, the government is pursuing contractionary fiscal policy. The combination of both these policies will cause interest rates to increase, which leads to a decrease in investment since a higher interest rate makes investment effectively cost more.
