Question:

What is a thesis statement, and why is it important in essays?

Answer:

A thesis statement is a statement that explains the primary argument of an essay. It is typically one sentence, and it comes at the end of the introductory paragraph. The thesis statement is important because it explains the point of the essay to the reader. The reader knows what lens they are supposed to read from, and it also helps the writer to stay on topic.

Question:

Literature addresses numerous important and relevant themes in our world. Literature addresses themes like freedom vs. equality, knowledge vs. ignorance, and greed. Explain how one piece of literature addresses a major real-life issue and what the text argues about that topic.

Answer:

"Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut is a dystopian short story that addresses the issue of freedom vs. equality. People who are overly strong or athletic are given shackles to make them slower. People who are especially smart are forced to wear helmets on their heads that disrupt their thinking, so they aren't smart anymore. People who are beautiful are forced to wear masks to cover their faces. The short story explains that the government constructed these rules in order for everyone to be equal. However, as the story progresses, Kurt Vonnegut shows his audience that making everyone exactly the same takes away humanity. People were not all meant to be exactly the same. When nobody is special people are less happy, and the world runs poorly.

Question:

What is the specific difference between passive and active voice, and why is active voice preferred by teachers and college professors?

Answer:

The active voice is very clear in describing who the subject of the sentence is. An example of this would be "I ran in the Boston Marathon." The passive voice is ambiguous regarding who the subject of the sentence is. An example of passive voice is "A marathon was run in Boston." The active voice is preferred because it is specific and direct. In the first sentence, it is clear that I ran the Boston Marathon. The second sentence is not clear. The reader does not know who is running the marathon.
