Explain a common theme that exist in the novels The Ice Storm by Rick Moody and in Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates when depicting the idea of the suburban myth
The expectations of both males and females have been explored in the novels The Ice Storm by Rick Moody and in Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates. Gender expectations and identity intersect in these books. Both novels highlight the consequences of submitting to social expectations of gender in the 1970s and 1960s respectively. During this time the idea of living in the suburbs with your family was encouraged by the government and emphasized by the media. The ideal was for the husband to work an office job in the city and his wife to submit to him and take care of the children. As a consequence of this pressure to conform it resulted in detrimental results to the family and the community. These books show the breakdown in the family specifically marriages because women were expected to be a certain way and men were expected to do certain things.
