What is the purpose of tone in academic writing?
Tone is incredibly important in any piece of writing in order for the author's message to be fully conveyed to readers. For academic writing specifically, it is crucial for writers to consider their audience(s) -- in many cases, the audience for an academic text will be teachers, professors, employers, and other professionals. Therefore, it is important to maintain an academic or professional tone when writing. For example, there is probably a big difference between how you speak to your friends and how you speak to your parents. Using appropriate tone can show that you, as a writer, are aware of your audience and are catering to them with your work.
What is the purpose of Adele's character in Kate Chopin's book, "The Awakening"?
As a character, Adele Ratignolle represents the female ideal within the timeframe the novel is set. Adele is a caring and doting wife and mother, while the main character -- Edna Pontellier -- desperately wants to break out of this role that is expected of her. Adele is meant to act as a foil character to Edna because Adele represents everything Edna is not. This highlights Edna's role as a "misfit" in society because she does not hold the values that are typical of women in the 1890s, in which the novel is set.

What is the difference between simple present and present continuous?
Simple present is usually used for repeated actions, and the present continuous shows actions that are happening now. For instance, imagine you are performing your usual morning routine. If you explain it to someone, you might say "I am brushing my teeth." This verb form (brushing) would be the present continuous because it is happening at the current moment. If someone were to ask if you brush your teeth everyday, you might say "Yes, I brush my teeth twice a day every day." This form of "brush" is simple present because it is used for a repeated action that happens every day.
