How can I help my young child enjoy writing?
As often as you can, model writing for your child. Make grocery lists, write out to do lists, and even label things around your home! Starting a family "story book" is a fabulous tool. Have your child dictate stories as you write it down. Act the stories out as a family! Giving your child a blank "book" to create their own story is a fabulous way to encourage writing, too. It's important to encourage your child to write things that are important to them (their name, their favorite toys, etc.). In the beginning, it's mostly about getting your children excited about the power of writing and less about the perfection of mechanics.

What kinds of activities will help my child with phonemic awareness?
The best way to help your child is to have fun playing with sound! Read tongue twisters to your child to help them practice isolated sound recognition. Count syllables in words. Work on sound synthesis (it starts with "b" and ends with "ig"- what is that word!). Practice the identification of sound positions (Where is the "g" sound in pig? The beginning, middle or end?). There are endless games to play to help children enjoy the process of learning about the importance and power of phonemes!
How can I help my child learn to read?
The process of learning to read is so exciting! To help your child flourish in the world of literacy, one of the best things you can do is read aloud as often as you can. While you read, ask questions and make predictions together. Model reading as a fun habit that everyone in the family enjoys doing. Identify letters and words in their natural settings (a stop sign, a menu, a license plate!). Make it a game! Play around with phonemes, word families, and sight words!
