Question:

How can I write a strong thesis statement?

Answer:

The first step is to think of the content that you want to communicate. What is the main idea or argument in your paper? Free writing, or just writing down your thoughts and knowledge about the topic, can be a helpful way to do this. Next, express this idea in one concise sentence. Your thesis should be specific--if it is too generic or broad, then it may be difficult to support within the scope of your assignment. Place the thesis near the beginning of the paper (usually near the end of the introduction paragraph). This helps your audience to easily identify your thesis and follow your argument.

Question:

How is religious iconography used in the Augustus of Primaporta?

Answer:

The Augustus of Primaporta combines several types of iconography (or imagery) in order to create a portrait of a powerful Roman emperor. The relief carvings on his breastplate are an example of religious iconography. They show Roman deities, including Apollo and Diana, indicating that the gods support Augustus. The small winged baby by his right leg is another example of religious iconography. This is Cupid, the son of the Roman goddess Venus. Augustus' adopted father Julius Caesar claimed to be descended from Venus, so Cupid is a reminder of the emperor's claim to have divine ancestry.
