What is the purpose of Graphic design?
I believe design is to create a better human experience. When we are frustrated if we cannot properly read a sign or can’t figure out an appliance that is poor design. Good design makes use of many disciplines centered on human behavior and research to affect the systems we interact with everyday. A person trained in Design Thinking can break molds and create with intention. A Designer should bring these skills and concepts back to humanity and make the average person’s life easier. The best creations will make an experience so seamless it goes almost unnoticed.
Subject: Digital Media
What kind of digital media skills are relevant in today’s market?
There is no one size fits all list of skills that make a great designer. However, learning a little of a lot of different skills and programs can give you useful leverage in the job market. The caveat is that once one finds the area they are most passionate about, typography or web development, it is time to go deep on that subject to mastery.
How do you communicate with design?
Design has principals, like hierarchy and contrast, used to communicate effectively with the public. These principals are standard when it comes to ensuring a poster, book or website is comprehensible and digestible to any user/viewer. Outside of these visual cues, a Designer does research, testing and critique to ensure a piece of work is as accessible as possible to everyone. Communicating well with Design requires one to think of the niche groups society ignores and prepare for ways to reach them with empathy.
