Question:

Given Jennifer Egan's decision to alternate points of view in "A Visit from the Goon Squad", what is she communicating to the audience by starting with Sasha's story?"

Answer:

Sasha is a compulsive thief. Stealing helps her feel both grounded and alive. All these people are connected in that time is a thief too, chasing them no matter how fast they run. They will run out of time. They are all desperately trying to make their lives meaningful in the time that they have, and in stealing a seemingly unimportant object, Sasha imbues an otherwise meaningless interaction with importance. Through her, we learn that it's not who gets from A to B, as Scotty thinks, but the moments that make up the journey along the way. Are we even in control of our time at all? Sasha certainly intends to be.

Question:

Would Pip's evolution throughout Great Expectations be considered an example of a Bildungsroman? Why or why not? Consider the definition of this term in your answer.

Answer:

Great Expectations is in many ways considered the epitome of a Bildungsroman. Pip grows up, seems to achieve all he ever dreamed, only to have it all dashed away. He is forced to learn from the cost of the mistakes, and in doing so, grow into the man Joe actually raised him to be. However, for him, Estella, with her cold veneer and stunning beauty, always represented the pinnacle of achievement. To win Estella would be to find a doorway into the world of his dreams. Estella cannot represent love, but obsession with what he can never truly become. Thus, I would argue, despite the novel itself following the structure of a Bildungsroman, in accepting Estella at the very last moment, Pip actually returns to the selfish and insecure boy he once was, despite his previous growth, and rejects his potential to come into his own, and find a life uninhibited by haves and have-nots.
