Which of the following compounds is more polar and why? Explain your reasoning. compound A: water compound B: oil (I would provide a picture of both but cannot attach them here)
Students must be able to recognize that a larger difference in electronegativity makes a substance polar. After seeing that oil is comprised of many C-H bonds, they will understand that this substance is largely nonpolar. Furthermore, they will recognize that O-H bonds have a greater difference in electronegativity values, thus, they are far more polar.
Carbon is the backbone of life on Earth. By looking at the periodic table, which element could potentially take the place of Carbon if it did not exist? a. Hydrogen b. Silicon c. Oxygen d. Nitrogen
My professor for biology used a similar question to this often. This requires that students understand how to read the periodic table correctly. They must know that Carbon is the backbone of life because it has four valence electrons. These valence electrons allow Carbon to form more complex structures than other elements. From there, students must be able to deduce that Silicon is the only element listed with four valence electrons, thus, (b.) silicon is the correct answer.
Jerry is creating shirts for a school fundraiser but he is not sure what package deal to choose for his order. Jerry sees one option for buying one-hundred shirts for $50.00. The second option includes two-hundred and fifty shirts for $120.00. Jerry needs 500 shirts at the lowest cost. a. Set up a one-variable equation for option 1 and option 2 to show how to calculate the cost of each shirt for its respective package. b. Solve both equations and find how much each shirt would cost for option 1 and option 2. c. Using your answers, argue which option is more cost-efficient. Suggest how Jerry should place his order in one or two sentences.
a. Students would need to set up some sort of equations like the following: 100shirtsxcost=50total & 250shirtsxcost=120total b. By solving the equations x for option1 = $0.50 cost per shirt & x for option2 = $0.48 cost per shirt c. Student should say that option 2 is more cost-efficient because the shirts are two cents cheaper if they are bought with that package. Student should suggest ordering twice from option 2.
