Students must be able to recognize that a larger difference in electronegativity makes a substance polar. After seeing that oil is comprised of many C-H bonds, they will understand that this substance is largely nonpolar. Furthermore, they will recognize that O-H bonds have a greater difference in electronegativity values, thus, they are far more polar.

My professor for biology used a similar question to this often. This requires that students understand how to read the periodic table correctly. They must know that Carbon is the backbone of life because it has four valence electrons. These valence electrons allow Carbon to form more complex structures than other elements. From there, students must be able to deduce that Silicon is the only element listed with four valence electrons, thus, (b.) silicon is the correct answer.

By solving the equations x for option1 = $0.50 cost per shirt & x for option2 = $0.48 cost per shirt c. Student should say that option 2 is more cost-efficient because the shirts are two cents cheaper if they are bought with that package. Student should suggest ordering twice from option 2.
