Question:

Describe an acid-base reaction in relation to inorganic compounds, such as the reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide.

Jonathan P.
Answer:

When mixed together, an acid and a base will react to neutralize charges to their lowest state. The H+ cation of HCl will combine with the OH- anion to form water. The result of this reaction is called a salt. In this case, the salt is NaCl, commonly known as table salt. The salt is formed along with water.

Question:

You are a yoga instructor leading your first class. You want to share some knowledge about breathing to the group. How would you describe the process of normal passive expiration to your student? Be sure to include the actions of the muscles involved, the volume of the lungs, the pressure of gases inside the lungs and gas flow.

Jonathan P.
Answer:

Inspiratory muscles relax and the associated elastic tissue contracts. The volume of the thorax and the lungs decrease, forcing gas molecules into a smaller space and thus increasing gas pressure such that it is higher than atmospheric pressure. Gas then flows out of the lungs because the pressure is lower in the atmosphere.
