How do you add two fractions with different denominators? 1/2 plus 2/3?
It is very important students first understand the vocabulary of a fraction with the denominator meaning the pieces of the whole and the numerator meaning the number out of the total. Then we need to explain about how fractions must have the same denominator before we can add them together. We need to think of the least common factor between two and three which would be six. Our six is our new denominator. Now we can add our new fractions together 3/6 plus 4.6 to give us 7/6 or an improper fraction. We can change it to a proper fraction to be one and 1/6.
