In a world where text messages seem to rule, why bother learning to write?
Writing is one of the most powerful tools we have to develop and share our thinking with others. A well-structured argument can persuade others to see the world as you do. A beautifully written description gives your reader a glimpse of the world that you see. A thoroughly developed research paper helps us make sense of the information that's out there and to put it into perspective for ourselves and other. That gives you so much more than a Tweet can do!
What can be gained from a study of literature?
First and foremost, literature is a conversation between you and the author. It provides you with a window to a wider world, a different perspective, a new way to think. Great literature is also familiar. It helps us see ourselves, recognize our common ground, and develop our sense of empathy for those around us. The deeper you dig into great literature, the more you will learn about yourself and others.
If I already speak English, why do I have to keep studying it?
Language is the single most important skill you possess. It allows you not only to make yourself understood by others, but it also helps you persuade, coach and support those around you. Strong language skills empower you to take on new career opportunities, learn other subjects, and present yourself with confidence. The better you read, write, speak and listen in English, the greater your chances of success in every other area of your life.
