When chlorine (a very poisonous green gas) combines with sodium (a toxic and explosive metal), it produces a very common molecular compound that is necessary to sustain life. What is the compound?
Sodium Chloride (NaCl), the chemical molecule produced, is also known as table salt and is neccesary to sustain life. While chlorine and sodium are very poisonous, their combination results in a chemical molecule that is not only edible, but is essential to every living thing. This shows that the chemical properties of atoms can change dramatically when they combine to make molecules.
When two genes are located on the same chromosome, what is the physical basis for the production of recombinant offspring in a test cross between a dihybrid parent and a double-mutant (recessive) parent?
Crossing over during meiosis I in the heterozygous parent produces some gametes with recombinant genotypes for the two genes. Offspring with a recombinant phenotype arise from fertilization of the recombinant gametes by homozygous recessive gametes from the double-mutant parent.
Why is it important that chyme from the stomach is delivered to the small intestine slowly and in small amounts?
If large quantities of chyme were forced into the small intestine, it would result in osmotic water loss from the blood into the intestinal lumen that could cause potentially life-threatening low blood volume and erosion of the duodenum.
