Question:

How do I write a thesis statement for a compare and contrast essay?

Inactive
Mj A.
Answer:

When writing a compare and contrast essay, your thesis would have two main parts: the items you're going to write about and a list of the topics you use to compare them. For example: "While Dracula and Frankenstein share core themes of the Gothic genre, they have key differences in the expression of supernatural beings, death, and the use of setting." In this thesis, I establish which two works I'm comparing and showing their similarities before specifying which parts I'm going to compare in the body paragraphs of my paper.

Question:

What types of irony are used in literature?

Answer:

There are three types of irony that are used in literature: verbal, situational, and dramatic. Verbal irony is when a character says one thing but means the opposite (kind of like sarcasm). Situational irony is when the result of a situation is the opposite of what was expected (for example, if a fire station burns down). Dramatic irony is when the audience or reader knows more about a situation that the characters are not aware of (like in Romeo and Juliet, the audience knows that Juliet isn't dead, but Romeo does not).

Question:

What is a sentence fragment and how can I correct it?

Inactive

Answer:

A sentence contains a subject, verb, and a complete thought. When one of these is missing, it becomes a fragment. Sometimes, fragments can be attached to a nearby sentence, if the content suggests it. Other times, you would need to add content to the sentence so it contains a subject or verb, or to complete your thought.
