Identify your learning pattern using the Learning Combination Inventory.
Out of the four different types of learning patterns, my behavior most closely resembles that of a sequential learner as I prefer to follow a plan. I am most efficient when I can follow step-by-step instructions without any interruptions. Nevertheless, I do tend to take detailed notes similarly to that of a Precise learner. Although I think I like to take risks, I would not be successful in school if that was my philosophy as that of a Confluent learner. Similarly, Technical learners thrive best with real-world experiences, however, that may not always be feasible for me in an online platform, so I would have to rely on other strengths when it comes to my learning styles.
Subject: Criminal Justice
Define the four main philosophies behind criminal sanctions and explain which you think is best.
The four main philosophies behind criminal sanctions are retribution, deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation. The theory of retribution surrounds the idea that the severity of the punishment should be proportionate to the wrongdoing that was committed. Deterrence in regard to criminal offending is the idea that the possibility or threat of punishment will be enough to deter a person(s) from committing a criminal act. The goal of this method is to prevent future crimes from happening and/or prevent the same crimes from happening again by the offender. Punishments typically include fines and/or prison sentences, and the severity of the punishment can be correlated to the effectiveness of the deterrent. When incapacitation is being utilized, the idea or theory behind this method is that the offender will be restricted as they are jailed or in prison therefore society will be protected as the person is restricted from the community and will not be able to commit those crimes again. The concept of rehabilitation surrounds the idea that there is some factor causing the individual to partake in criminal behavior rather than the person’s free will of doing so. With that in mind, rehabilitation mimics that of a medical model as the goal is to uncover the cause of behavior and treat each case on and individualized basis. The goal is to “cure” the offender to then return the offender into society to be a productive and contributing member. Overall, I believe in retributive justice as it can include elements of the other three theories while still ensuring that the guilty is punished, the innocent are protected, and there is a balance restored to society after being impacted by a crime.
With focus on the Path-Goal Leadership Theory, provide four leadership styles associated with this theory and explain whether leaders can exhibit more than one theory.
The Path-Goal Theory centralizes on the ability of a leader to motivate their employees to achieve their goals (set by the organization) by the means of considering the style and traits of the employees within the work environment (Northouse, 2013). With this theory in mind, the leader would choose from the follow four leadership styles: Directive leadership – With this style of leadership, specific instructions are given to an employee to complete a task which in turn does not allow for the employee to accomplish items in their own way. Supportive leadership – A leader with this style will focus on being positive when their employees are completing a task and lesson the control on “how” the task is being accomplished. Participative leadership – When a leader is participative, the leader is actively communicating with their employees by sharing ideas, opinions and feedback when it comes to decision making. Achievement-orientated leadership – This style of leadership is used to challenge, but also motivate their employees to perform at their highest levels. Considering the different styles of leadership in this theory, it is possible for leaders to exhibit more than one theory as it may depend upon the situation what style could/would be the most effective. It will be on the responsibility of the leader to know their employees and what style of leadership will drive the best results for both the company and the workers while also understanding environment and task at hand.
