Cystic fibrosis is caused by a homozygous (two copies - one on either chromosome) variant in the CTFR gene. This reduces the functionality of the CTFR protein which leads to thickened mucus in the lungs, and hence cystic fibrosis.
What is DNA made from?
DNA consists of four nucleotide bases; adenine, guanine, tyrosine and cytosine. These four nucleotide bases are arranged in order with a sugar phosphate backbone to create the iconic DNA helix structure. This structure was discovered by famous scientists Watson and Crick.
What is a gene?
