Subject: Writing
How many paragraphs are in an essay?
As many as you need to get your point across, many students get caught in the five-paragraph essay, which is a huge limitation, especially when they get into longer page requirements. The five-paragraph essay is used to build up a writer's ability to format an essay; it is a great place to start. Unfortunately, most students struggle to transcend it.
Subject: Literature
As a reader, how concerned should you be with the author's intent?
Not at all. An author's intent for their work does not exclude their work from interpretation. Furthermore, it should not influence the reader's experience or negate their perspective.
Subject: English
What makes English unique from other languages?
Specificity and drama, while not seemingly unique to English, become so when one considers the degree of specificity and drama the English language allows. For example, think of the word 'big' in most other languages; there are about three variations of the word; however, there are over twenty in English.
