Although the Supreme Court typically functions as an appellate court, in which types of cases does it act as a court of original jurisdiction?
As stated in Article III, Section 2 of the US Constitution, and further defined by federal law, the Supreme Court is granted original jurisdiction in cases involving Ambassadors and other public officials, and disputes involving a state as one of the parties. This includes disputes between two states, the Federal government and a state, and a case where the state is a party against a citizen of another state.

Describe the significance of the New Deal programs and the impact these programs had on the role of the federal government.
The New Deal programs were a set of several federal programs created in the 1930s in an attempt to get the US economy out of the Great Depression. The programs can be categorized into three subgroups, each having an important role in the ultimate recovery of the US economy. Relief programs were created as direct assistance to the unemployed. Programs such as the Public Works Administration (PWA) and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) provided jobs in construction of public projects and park renovations. Recovery programs were designed to stimulate the economy. The Agricultural Adjustment Acts of 1933 and 1937 paid farmers to plant less, as a way to increase prices of agricultural products. Finally, several reforms were legislated that aimed to fix the inherent weaknesses in the economy, and protect people against risks they individually could not handle. An enduring example of a reform program is the Social Security Act. These programs combined expanded the power and role of the federal government into the daily lives of Americans, and has continued to do so today.
