What is the purpose of a thesis statement and how does it serve to help organize an essay?
The thesis statement is a clear, concise, and direct expression of the purpose of a writing. In other words, there must be a well-written sentence that pinpoints the topic of the paper as well as what the author intends to demonstrate, prove, or show in the body paragraphs. With this precise intention, which can also be thought of as a destination, the writer can then start thinking about how they can arrive at their desired conclusion, specifically which arguments provide the evidence necessary to make the argument strong enough to withstand criticism and doubt.
In Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's novella "Carmilla," several gothic elements are used. Give a few examples and explain how the function to create tension in the story.
The unseen and presumed unspeakable horrors that may lie in the shadows as well as the terror of anticipating them are quintessential gothic elements. Darkness serves to build an ever-increasing feeling of uncertainty and a general air of disquietude in the reader as well as the characters. Early in the story, Laura and her father are were taking a walk out in the woods surrounding their isolated home under a moonlit sky. Being out in nature was a frequently employed way to commune with and give due reverence to the sublimity of God's creation, thus also reflecting how inextricably intertwined daily life and religious beliefs were in the late 19th century when the novella was published. The fear of the devil and his machinations gave rise to the faithful seeking to be more vigilant in their observance and avoidance of evil. However, nefarious as the fallen angel Lucifer is, their efforts can be unsuccessful. Evidence of this is revealed in the scene in which Carmilla's carriage crashes in the pitch black of night in a thickly wooded area results in the young girl being injured and in need of shelter and rest. Pious as he is, Laura's father cannot resist this opportunity to show his Christian love. The haziness surrounding Carmilla's identity shades her secret that she is an ages-old vampire whose charming facade hides the demon within. The inky depths of the gothic horror in this short tale were welcomed into the contrasting safety and warmth of innocence with open and loving arms.
Which part of speech describes the relationship between two nouns in a sentence?
Prepositions explain how two people, places, or things are related within a sentence. For example, in the sentence, "Mark is going to the zoo today," The two nouns are Mark and zoo. In order to understand what Mark and the zoo have to do with each other, the word "to" tells the reader that Mark is planning to visit the zoo. Without the preposition, readers would have to guess which action Mark would take in relation to the zoo.
