Question:

What is the best way to know you understand the definition of a word when studying vocabulary?

Answer:

The best way to check that you understand the definition of a word is to write the meaning of the term in "your own words". This means to write it in a way that makes sense for you - that way you know you have a full understanding of the vocabulary's definition. Sometimes, it can be helpful to include an example of where you might use the word in addition to your own version of the definition.

Question:

What is the difference between a natural minor, a harmonic minor ,and a melodic minor scale?

Answer:

A natural minor scale is when the 3rd, 6th, and 7th scale degrees in a major scale are lowered. From there, the harmonic and melodic minor scales can be created. In a harmonic minor scale, the seventh scale degree is raised from the natural minor scale. In a melodic minor scale, the sixth and seventh minor scale degrees are raised from the natural minor scale when the scale is ascending. However, both scale degrees lower and return to the natural minor scale when descending. For example, a C Major Scale (a Major scale with no sharps or flats) would have "E natural " "B natural " and "A natural" lowered to "E flat", "A flat" and "B flat" to build a natural minor scale. In a harmonic minor scale, the only note that changes is "B flat", as it would be raised to "B natural" . In a melodic minor scale, only "A flat" and "B flat" are raised to "A natural" and "B natural" when ascending. When the scale is descending, they will return to "A flat" and "B flat".
