What's a good approach to understanding organic chemistry?
There are a couple of arguments to use: steric and electronic. 1) Steric deals with atoms or molecules repelling each other because they are too close. 2) There are two subgroups here: resonance and induction. a. Resonance is simply more than one possible structure of a molecule is correct when drawing Lewis structures. b. Induction is simply the pull of electrons, like electronegativity.
How can I do better at getting the correct answers?
You should focus on the concept rather than memorize how to do problems. With an understanding of the concept, you can do any question regardless of how much your professor changes it. If you choose to go the memorization route, there will be a tremendous amount of memorizing to do. It's better to simply understand.
