Phineas Gage had an accident while working at a railroad. An iron rod went through his skull and destroyed large parts of his frontal lobe. The personal and behavioural changes that happened after the incident enabled researchers and medical practitioners to conclude that certain personality traits such as decision making ability, social cognition may be dependent on the proper functioning of frontal lobes. This began a lot more research into localisation of task to brain area.
