Question:

What are the key elements of a well-structured essay?

Answer:

A well-structured essay will have a strong introduction that sets the scene for the essay topic. It will present the context, the thesis and the plan so that the reader is aware of the direction taken. Ideally, there will be three paragraphs, presenting different points/ideas. Each will also have a short introduction, a thesis with examples and a concluding sentence that will serve as a link back to the topic. The conclusion should summarise what has been argued and affirm a stance/ answer to the main question of the essay. It can also be interesting to end the essay with an opening to another/further question relating to the subject.

Question:

What are the three main schools of thought in International Relations?

Answer:

The three main schools of thought in International Relations are realism, liberalism and constructivism. Realism is thought to be the most prominent theory, based on ancient writers such as Hobbes and Machiavelli. Realists believe that states are the main actors in the international system, that they are driven by their need for survival and that therefore that international relations are based on a struggle for power. Liberalism allows for cooperation between states in the international system as they are not only concerned by themselves but rather united by common beliefs and goals such as culture and economics. Finally, constructivists question how language and culture are creating forces of the world order. They are interested by how ideas can shape international relations.
