What will help me become a better writer?
Often, students don't carefully think through a writing assignment before they start writing. To get off to a good start, review exactly what the assignment is. What instructions have you been given? Make sure your planned topic is a good match before you start writing, and you will save yourself both time and frustration. Another way to improve your writing is to ask for feedback. Once you have completed a draft of a writing assignment, ask someone else to read it over and see if it makes sense to them. The question here is not whether the writing is "good" or "bad," but whether it makes logical sense and is understandable. You may discover that you have left out a piece of crucial information, or that you need to explain your argument more clearly.
What is the point of Ulysses by James Joyce?
Although Ulysses was published in 1922, it is modeled on Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey, which dates back to about 800 BCE. The main character in Homer's poem is Odysseus, a Greek war hero who wanders the world for ten years on his way home from battle. The main character in Ulysses (which means Odysseus in Latin) is Leopold Bloom, an ordinary man living in Dublin in the early twentieth century. By revealing the richness and complexity of Bloom's thoughts and everyday experiences, James Joyce shows that an average person's life can be epic in its own way.
What purpose does a flashback serve in a story?
A flashback provides information about a character's past experiences that the reader needs to understand the character's current behavior. The information in a flashback would not otherwise be revealed in the course of the story. For example, a story about a military veteran having a psychological breakdown might focus on the details of the breakdown. Flashbacks in such a story, however, might focus on the veteran's actual experiences in battle.
