What is gender? What is the difference between gender and sex? How are they related?
Gender and sex are not necessarily always the same. Sex refers to a person's genitalia while gender refers to their expression of femininity/masculinity and how they choose to identify. Sometimes, someone may have the sex male and identify their gender as a man. This is known as cis-gender. Other times, someone may have the sex male and identify more as a woman, known as transgender. There is more to gender expression than just man and women, however. Often, some choose to identify in a third category often known as "gender fluid", "non-binary", or even "gender queer". The meaning behind each gender is not always the same for every person, so it is important to note that no one definition can be used to describe it. However, the general consensus is that gender can be perceived as a spectrum ranging for highly masculine identifier, highly feminine identifiers, and those who are somewhere in between. Just as there is more than just "man" and "woman", there is also more than just "male" and "female". Some are born as a sex other than these, which is known as inter-sex. Again, this depends on the person, but inter-sex can be determined by someone who has both male and female genitalia. Additionally, someone who is inter-sex can have XXY chromosomes while only having the genitals of either male or females, and may not be visibly noticeable until the child goes through puberty. Males have XY chromosomes, females have XX chromosomes, therefore XXY would be someone who is inter-sex.
