Explain the structure of a zinc finger domain. What is the purpose of this structure?

Answer:

These are small protein motifs that have ridges that look like fingers. These domains bind metals, often zinc. Zinc fingers are especially found to bind in the major groove of DNA, because of the shape of their protrusions. Its best known function is to serve as a DNA-binding protein.

Question:

You live in the Santa Monica mountains. You notice that amongst the chaparral, some of the plants have leaves that are red towards the top. Why would you think that is? Propose an experiment to further investigate the question.

Answer:

I would hypothesize that these plants are producing anthocyanin, a type of flavanoid that is used by plants as a means for photoprotection. The leaves that are red are mostly younger and towards the top of the plant, which means they are able to photosynthesize less and need more protection from the sun. To further investigate this I would use a portable photosynthesis system to measure photosynthesis on 7 green leaves and 7 red leaves on 7 different individual plants. I hypothesize that the red leaves will have a significantly slower photosynthetic rate.
