According to Jerome Bruner, what is the theory behind "scaffolding" and how do we apply it in our current education system (in the US)?
Scaffolding refers to the thinking that if a student is given a solid educational foundation, new material will be easier to learn. In the classroom, we can do this in various ways. We can do this in lesson plans, by gradually increasing the complexity of a given subject as the students gain understanding and confidence. We can also do it in the way we teach by providing multiple opportunities to review material (i.e. asking a variety of questions) and giving constructive feedback to the student.
