About James

About James
Born in Canada and raised in the American southwest, I've also spent many years living abroad, in Czech Republic, France, and South Korea. Since my youth, I've had interests in both the sciences and the humanities, as well as the arts--first music, and then, later, photography. These interests have a common root in a love of exploring and learning about the world, through means both academic and not. After college, I discovered that this love of learning is the basis for a love of teaching as well.

Teaching Experience

Teaching Experience
I began working as an EFL teacher overseas in 2004 and gained several years of classroom experience in France and South Korea. My teaching career was interrupted in 2011 by long-developing chronic illnesses that finally became acute. Following recovery, in 2014 I returned to teaching, and within that to the subject of my university major, as well, teaching math at home rather than EFL abroad, and discovering through the one-on-one school where I worked a preference for teaching students individually rather than at the head of a classroom.

Work Experience

Work Experience
Brightmont Academy, Instructor
2014 - 2016
Brightmont is an accredited private school that teaches Apex Learning’s digital curriculum at the elementary, middle, and high-school levels, and also offers tutoring services to students enrolled in schools elsewhere. All teaching and tutoring is done one-on-one, so that teachers can provide individualized instruction. I taught all levels of middle and high-school math, including calculus, as well as high-school physics, chemistry, and biology, and tutored both math and English.
Chungdahm Learning, Instructor
2006 - 2011
Chungdahm is one of Korea’s highest-ranked English academies and is known for placing high expectations upon their instructors. I taught general academic skills in immersive English classes, in addition to teaching debate and iBT test prep, as well as world history from a US high-school textbook. I was twice-voted MVP by a fellow staff of approximately 35 teachers, and awarded by our management the top ranking in the school's faculty appraisal system, based on parent/student feedback and CCTV review of my classes.
