First, we must move the term "10" to the other side of the equation (away from the variable) by subtracting 10 from both sides. We would then see this hypothetically: 5x + 10 -10 = 55 -10, which we would then do the actual subtraction and then have 5x = 45. Now, we must isolate x by itself by dividing both sides of the equation by 5. Next we would have 5x/5 = 45/5, which would give us x = 9. The answer is 9. We can quickly and easily check our work by plugging the value 9 in for the variable x. This would give us 5(9) + 10 = 55. Then we would multiply it out and get 45 + 10 = 55; 55 = 55. We know we are correct because 55 = 55.
