Question:

State two pieces of advice George Washington gave the people of the United States in his Farewell Address (1796) and briefly explain whether or not this advice was heeded.

Answer:

One piece of advice George Washington had was to avoid the creation of political parties, as he feared this sectionalism would divide the leaders and therefore the country. This advice was certainly not heeded as Jefferson created the Democratic-Republican party in an effort to oppose Hamilton's Federalist party for essentially the very next election. The second piece of advice of note was the plea for the United States to stay out of the affairs of other countries and practice a policy of isolationism. This advice did not stick as the United States would come to be involved in many wars outside of it's own borders.
