About Gillian

About Gillian
I'm a writer and poet currently living in the vivid city of Chicago, IL. I received my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia; I double-majored in Linguistics and English with a minor in Media Studies (I graduated after completing eight consecutive semesters of the Dean's List). After that, I completed a yearlong AmeriCorps program at a soup kitchen, backpacked around Europe working odd jobs at hostels and a circus, and then came to Chicago to acquire a Masters in Fine Arts from Columbia College Chicago with a full scholarship. This...

Teaching Experience

Teaching Experience
I spent two years as a writing tutor at Columbia College Chicago's Learning Studio, working one-on-one with students of all levels. Each tutoring session was an hour, and I had many students returning to see me weekly or biweekly. I also taught three semesters of Writing and Rhetoric in the Columbia College Chicago English Department, creating my own curriculum and syllabus and grading each student based on their improvement, writing skills, and attention in class.

Work Experience

Work Experience
Columbia College Chicago, Graduate Student Instructor
2014 - 2016
I took a semester-long course on the subject of teaching writing, which ultimately led to my job offer as an instructor with the Columbia College English Department. Here, I taught a class whose curriculum I myself designed; the classes contained eighteen college freshmen and sophomores who had to take Writing and Rhetoric in order to satisfy their general requirements. The class dealt with topics like structuring an academic essay; creating a creative non-fiction piece; how to talk knowledgeably about how writing works; techniques for strong...
Columbia College Chicago, Writing Consultant
2014 - 2016
I worked in the Learning Studio with students visiting me for hourly sessions. These students came from all kinds of educational backgrounds, and they brought in many different types of writing at any stage in the writing process. Oftentimes, I'd help students brainstorm, but I also proofread for grammar and critiqued the structure of their essay. At the end of each session, the student and I would fill out session reports that would be sent to me, the student, my supervisor, and the student's instructor.
