How do I plan an essay?

Jordanna R.

Writing on a particular topic can sometimes feel daunting. However, if you are able to come up with a good strategy for planning an essay, you will find that the writing process will go more smoothly and you can save yourself a lot of time during the editing process. Here are some steps to help you get started: 1. Brainstorm: Consider the topic you're writing on and simply list what comes to mind, such as hot-button issues, important considerations, related current events, etc. 2. Define your position: Be able to state your argument in a single sentence. 3. Identify your reasons: Pick out at least three of the key points you want to use to convince the reader. 4. Cite examples: Identify examples that illustrate each of the points you are trying to make. 5. Select references: If appropriate, choose some sources that give validity to your argument (e.g. short quotes, statistics, studies), keeping in mind that an essay is generally limited in length. 5. Drive it home: Determine what the message is that you want the reader to take away from your essay.

Question:

How do I determine if a triad is major, minor, augmented or diminished?

To determine the type of triad, you must examine the intervals of which the triad is composed. Each interval is some sort of third, but the question is: is it a minor third or a major third? Looking at the triad, determine whether the bottom interval is a major or minor. Then do the same for the top interval. Now, you can determine the type of triad based on these definitions: Bottom: Major, Top: Minor = Major Bottom: Minor, Top: Major = Minor Bottom: Major, Top: Major = Augmented Bottom: Minor, Top: Minor = Diminished
