Question:

Can you tell me how to find scholarly articles on the Samurai?

Inactive
Matthew O.
Answer:

Yes! We can start by searching Google Scholar for Samurai. Depending on your assignment you will probably need to narrow your topic to some aspect of Samurai culture or a particular period in Japanese history. After the initial search using just the keyword "Samurai" look for additional topics or keywords (such as Hagakure, or a particular time period or region of Japan) that interest you and include those in subsequent searches. Also, let's find out if your school or college library has access to scholarly articles. That will increase the number of articles you can access the full text (as in, read the whole articles) of. I can show you how to add your library account to Google Scholar or make recommendations on which databases you should use from your school or college library for further searching.

Question:

What are some factors that contributed to Westward Expansion?

Answer:

To name just a few: By the second half of the Nineteenth century technological advances such as railroads allowed people to move across the country more quickly. Population growth and tall tales of gold and other riches fueled a desire to settle west. The Homestead Act ( of 1862) granted settlers 160 acres of free land if they cultivated it for 5 years. Manifest destiny was the ideology of Westward Expansion. Manifest Destiny (thought to be originated by a newspaper editor named John L. O'Sullivan) was the belief that it was Americans God given right to settle all land to the Pacific Ocean. Mormons and other religious groups also moved west seeking more freedom from laws and angry neighbors who objected to their practices and beliefs.

Question:

The practice of the Catholic Church selling indulgences is the most well known but what are some other factors that led to the protestant reformation?

Answer:

By the 16th century the Catholic Church was the dominant religious institution in Western Europe. The Catholic Church also had great political influence over much of Western Europe by allying itself with the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire as well as other monarchs. Some princes who were under the authority of the Holy Roman emperor were not pleased with this arrangement, they supported Protestantism to undermine the emperor's authority. Princes could convert their entire principality after conversation. This power struggle ultimately led to the Thirty Years' War. The creation of the printing press allowed for Luther and others sympathetic to Protestantism to spread their ideas more quickly. The printing press also allowed people to access the copies of Bible translated into their own language. This allowed them to access the text unmediated by Catholic Church Clergy and form their own ideas on existing practices in the Catholic Church.
