Question:

How do you know when to use avere or essere in the past tense (passato prossimo)?

Rebecca W.
Answer:

Avere can be used with all transitive verbs, or verbs that precede an object. For example, mangiare (to eat) and leggere (to read) both use avere. Most verbs that indicate a certain type of movement, such as andare (to go) and partire (to leave), use essere. Verbs that indicate a change, such as cambiare (to change) or diventare (to become), as well as reflexive verbs, like divertirsi (to enjoy oneself), all use essere.

Question:

How do you cure writer's block?

Rebecca W.
Answer:

Writer's block is one of the most common and challenging dilemmas that writers face. Although there is no set "cure," certain strategies can be used to help one overcome the initial fear or hesitation associated with starting a paper. I often find that it is helpful to "free write," or to create a constant stream of continuous writing and thoughts on a subject, meanwhile ignoring spelling, grammar and even punctuation. This can help one to generate and clarify ideas, and it makes the process of writing less intimidating.

Question:

What is the origin of life?

Rebecca W.
Answer:

Life began on Earth around three billion years ago. Scientists are still unsure about how life began, and there are many theories, one of which is known as the "RNA World" hypothesis. RNA, or ribonucleic acid, is present in all living cells and carries out many important functions, including protein synthesis and transferring genetic information. Many scientists believe that RNA was the first molecule responsible for helping life through its earliest stages. DNA and proteins then developed, and they were able to perform the same responsibilities more efficiently.
