How does one go about building a heat transfer model of a system?
Heat transfer models are built upon the analogy to resistors in electronic circuits. A "thermal resistance" is used and one can model a system as such.
What is a shock wave?
A shock wave is nothing more than sound waves that are catching up to one another. Since sound waves travel at the local speed of sound, if the object creating these waves is traveling faster than that speed, the sound waves propagating from it will coalesce into a shock!
