Question:

What is the 'Hostage System' in relation to Imperial Japan?

Answer:

The ‘Hostage System’ was a system devised by Tokugawa Ieyasu that was meant to ensure the loyalty of the daimyos. He made each daimyo have two homes, one situated in the area in which they were in charge and the other in Edo which was the home of the government. Every year the daimyos were required to go to Edo for a couple weeks or so and pay tribute to Tokugawa. He also made sure that the daimyo had to leave some of their family in Edo who were essentially ‘hostages’ of Tokugawa. This is how he kept control of the daimyos.

Question:

Describe one major difference between Native Americans and the European colonists.

Answer:

Native Americans and colonists had very different views of humans’ place in the world. The colonists’ Puritan religion stressed order in the home as well as a stringent hierarchy of man, beast, and environment where everyone and everything had its place. However, Native Americans believed that humans and animals were two equal parts of the environment which unsurprisingly clashed with the colonists’ strict organization of the natural world. Keeping livestock and the colonial view that animals could be property was such a radical idea for Native Americans that they did not have words for it.
