What is a hydroxyl group? carbonyl group?
Hydroxyl = -OH carbonyl Group=CR(2)O
What does an excited atom mean?
This means that when a specific atom gains energy, their electrons move up an energy level, which is further away from the nucleus.
Describe the sodium-potassium/ATPase and how it relates to neuronal function.
The sodium-potassium/ATPase pumps out 3 sodium, and pumps in 3 potassium while hydrolyzing 1 ATP. The potassium leak channels allows the potassium ions to move down it's gradient. This gives the membrane of a cell a resting membrane potential of -70mV. When the voltage-gated sodium pump opens after the threshold, the membrane becomes depolarized, which allows the action potential to start. This travels down the axon to the axon terminus (synapse). The Sodium-potassium pump allows the cell to return to normal.
