Slavery in Ancient Greece was not unlike how slavery used to be in the United States in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The economy like in the United States was heavily dependent upon agriculture which was what slaves were principally used for. Along with agriculture, tens of thousands of slaves were employed in silver mines, another fundamental aspect of the Greek economy. It was very common for every household in a city—especially in Athens where thirty percent of the population was slaves— to own at least one slave, only the poorest people did not. Slavery in Ancient Greece dates as far back as the Mycenaean Period, it became an important part of the economy and society after cities had been established. Other than in agriculture, slave labor was prevalent in mines and quarries where large slave populations were leased by rich private citizens; in addition, slaves were also used as craftsmen and trades-persons. Slaves were a very vital part of the Ancient Greek way of life, they cooked, cleaned, worked the fields, factories, shops and even made up the police force in ancient Athens, women mainly worked domestic jobs, they were teachers, messengers and wet nurses; most slaves lives did not differ much from a poor Greek citizen’s way of life.
