Question:

Photosynthesis is the process by which photosynthetic organisms (Plants, Bacteria and algae) convert light energy into chemical energy. Specifically, plants have three different types of photosynthesis (C3, C4 and CAM) depending on the species and the environmental conditions they are exposed to. Bromelia is a genus of plants in which most species have an epiphyte habit, meaning that they live and grow over other plants and have no contact with the soil. Demonstrate your knowledge in photosynthesis by mentioning two differences between the three types of photosynthesis and based on the above statement ¿Which type of photosynthesis is most likely for Bromelia genus given their epiphytic habit and why?

Camilo Q.
Answer:

Unlike C3 and C4 plants, CAM plants open their stomata at night to capture CO2 and close them in the daytime. This is a strategy to help plants to avoid evapotranspiration and is a type of photosynthesis that is associated with plants in habitats where water availability is low. Another difference is that CAM and C4 plants have an enzyme called PEPC that is in charge of capturing atmospheric CO2 while C3 plants capture atmospheric CO2 through the Rubisco. The presence of PEPC is an advantage for plants because it prevents photorespiration. Bromelia genus have CAM-type photosynthesis, because they live on plants, they do not have roots to absorb water from the soil, which means that water availability is very low.
