Question:

How would you explain what the model of memory is in more simple terms and can you provide an example?

Answer:

You have became aware of sensory information (via your five senses) from your external environment. For example, you found your social security card that you need to bring in for your first day of work tomorrow. When you found your social security card, your eyes scanned over the numbers on the card. Those numbers go into your sensory memory where you can either choose to attend to those number or forget it. You attended to those numbers because you want to memorize your social security number instead of pulling out your card each time your orientation paperwork asks for your social security number. Because you attended to the sensory stimuli (social security card), it then enters your short-term memory. This is where you rehearse the sequence of numbers in your head, out loud, on paper, etc. If you do not rehearse, it will be be forgotten from your short-term member and not encode to long-term memory. After rehearsing, the social security number enters (encodes) your long-term memory. The next time you are prompted to enter social security number, your brain will retrieve the information from your long-term memory and enter your short-term memory for you to access, or remember the number sequence.
