Question:

What is the single most important factor to communicating effectively through writing?

M.j. R.
Answer:

Fine writing varies in style depending on the genre and objective of the writer. An academic paper whose sole purpose is to convey information will differ in style from a crime novel. The mark of good writing is whether it effectively communicates the intended message. In the case of a crime novel, the reader should feel suspense, fear, excitement, and a connection with the events in the story. However, a student writing an academic paper should write in clean, straightforward language that demonstrates mastery of the subject. Good writing cannot be separated from the message.

Question:

Why is it important for students to gain a mastery of literature?

M.j. R.
Answer:

Literature (whether it is fiction, history, nonfiction, plays, epics, novels, or short stories) seeks to impart an understanding of the world we share. When we experience the stories in literature, we gain not only a window into historical aspects of a story, but also an emotional reaction the the plights of the characters. In essence, we are given the opportunity to live through human experiences vastly different from our own, fostering empathy, understanding, and insight into diverse walks of life. All humans communicate through storytelling. Mastering literature gives us the tools we need to make sense of our messy and confusing existence.

Question:

What is the difference between a subject and object in a sentence?

M.j. R.
Answer:

The subject of the sentence is responsible for the action indicated by the verb. The object of a sentence is a noun that receives the action of the verb. For example, "Michael met Sheila at a flash mob." Michael is the subject of the sentence because he is taking the action, "met". Sheila was met by Michael, so she received his "meeting", making her the object of the sentence.
