What happened at the incident referred to as "Love Canal" and why is it important to environmental regulations today?
"Love Canal" was an incident in which a chemical company (Hooker) was disposing of its hazardous waste in a canal in New York city that was later drained, lined and converted into a landfill. Years later, a school district bought the land and developed it into a school and neighboring single family homes. Years of complaints and activism (specifically by Lois Gibbs and several other mothers of sick children in the Love Canal neighborhood) spurred an investigation by the EPA, who utilized emergency funds to clean the site. Love Canals importance to environmental regulation is the creation of CERCLA (the Superfund Act) in which the government created a program to utilize funds to clean up emergency sites such as Love Canal.
