For several years I worked as a developmental reading and writing instructor at colleges in New York as part of a program called CUNY Start. Prior to that I taught English to elementary school students in South Korea, and before that I worked as a volunteer teacher at an after-school program for middle and elementary school students in South Boston, Massachusetts.

CUNY Start, Reading/Writing Instructor
2019 - 2020
Led a remedial English class preparing students to retake and pass their CUNY Assessment Tests in Reading and Writing and then start their credit courses within the CUNY system. Taught essay composition and how to craft a literary analysis paper. Led students through the close reading and discussion of short stories as well as memoir excerpts and aided them in developing their critical reading, writing, and reasoning skills.
CUNY Start, Support Reading/Writing Instructor

Co-taught a cohort of roughly 20 remedial Reading/Writing students alongside the Lead Instructor. Implemented CUNY Start curriculum in concert with co-teacher as well as planned and led original lessons independently to help students develop their writing, reading, and critical thinking skills within the CUNY Start framework. Conducted an independent research project into different pedagogical approaches for teaching inferential reading skills to students.

Served as an assistant instructor for two cohorts of 20+ remedial Reading/Writing students in the CUNY Start program. Aided the Lead Instructor with lesson planning, grading, and overall classroom management. Planned and taught original lessons and implemented lesson plans under the guidance of the Lead Instructor and in alignment with the CUNY Start Reading/Writing curriculum. Acquired experience teaching cooperatively as well as leading lessons and managing a classroom of diverse learners independently.

Served as a Writing Assistant in a remedial Reading/Writing classroom within the CUNY Start program. Provided feedback on student papers and essays as well as one-to-one tutoring support. Assisted the Reading/Writing instructor as needed in the classroom on a day-to-day basis.
