Question:

What are the most common features of an oligarchy and how does it compare to a monarchy?

Christi P.
Answer:

An oligarchy is a form of government where the leaders or rulers of a society consist of a small group of people who come from a particular social class. The rulers of an oligarchy are usually wealthy, educated, or connected to the military. A monarchy is similar to an oligarchy due to its rulers being a small group of people who are connected by wealth or military ties. However, the rule of a monarchy is often limited to one family bloodline, while an oligarchy can be ruled by any family if they have powerful connections to wealth or the military.

Question:

What is the difference between a complex sentence and a compound sentence?

Christi P.
Answer:

A complex sentence consists of at least one dependent clause and one independent clause. The clauses in a complex sentence are most often separated by a comma. For example: "After Jane cleaned her room, she went outside to play." is a complex sentence. "After Jane cleaned her room" is the dependent clause. It cannot stand on its own as a simple sentence. "She went outside to play" is the independent clause. It can serve as a simple sentence independent of "After Jane cleaned her room". When the dependent and the independent clauses are combined, however, the result is a complex sentence. A compound sentence consists of at least two independent clauses. The clauses in a compound sentence are separated by a conjunction. For example: "Mark walked the dog, and Brian fed the cat." is a compound sentence. "Mark walked the dog" is an independent clause that can stand alone as a simple sentence. "Brian fed the cat" is also an independent clause that works as a simple sentence. Together, these clauses are joined together by the conjunction "and" to form a compound sentence.

Question:

How would you compare and contrast Impressionism and Expressionism?

Christi P.
Answer:

Impressionism began in the mid-19th Century. It was a popular painting style among French artists. The word "impression" is a key factor when describing the appearance of an Impressionist painting. This means that the objects in the painting are visualized from an external impression or perspective of a human being. Realism is used in Impressionism to emphasize the human and outdoor subjects in the painting. Color is also an important feature in Impressionism because it is used to highlight the most significant objects or parts in the painting. Famous Impressionist painters include: Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Mary Cassatt. Expressionism began after Impressionism. It's origins can be traced to Germany in the early 20th Century. Unlike Impressionism, Expressionism does not display aspects of realism. Instead, the word "expression" is a key factor when describing the appearance of an Expressionist painting. This means that internal expressions or moods such as anger and joy are a significant element in Expressionism. Similar to Impressionism, color is emphasized in an Expressionist painting. Bright colors such as orange and lime green represent strong emotions. Dark and subdued colors such as brown and pale blue meanwhile represent more subtle emotions. Some of the more famous Expressionist painters are: Egon Schiele, Franz Marc, and Jackson Pollock.
