What are the three types of prevention, as discussed by Public Health professionals?
1. Primary Prevention: the prevention of a disease, condition or injury before it occurs. This type of prevention is administered through vaccines, public health education, and legislation. 2. Secondary Prevention: the attempt to prevent a disease, condition or injury from further affecting the individual once it has already occurred. This type of prevention can be witnessed through: cancer screenings, diet and exercise programs to prevent additional heart attacks, etc. 3. Tertiary Prevention: the management of a chronic illness or injury, in an attempt to soften its effects on the individual. Examples include rehabilitation programs, chronic disease management programs, support groups.
Why do we study Latin American Studies?
The study of Latin American began during the Cold War when the U.S. government encouraged learning about other regions of the world in an attempt to promote national security and curb the spread of communism. Today, the U.S. government, along with numerous other governmental and nongovernmental organizations worldwide, promote learning about other regions of the world in order to enhance public knowledge, improve international relations, and expand research.
