Question:

Why does the mitochondria have a double membrane?

Answer:

If you remember the endo-symbiotic theory, then you remember that at some point a large cell, an eukaryotic cell, engulfed a mitochondria by endocytosis and for some reason it was not broken down. As that cell replicated it produced more cells with mitochondria in them. Because the mitochondria gave that cell an advantage by producing ATP for the cell it was more "fit" and thus became the optimal type of cell an was more able to live than other cells.
