Question:

What does allegory mean?

Molly R.
Answer:

An allegory is a type of extended metaphor. Google says it's a story, poem or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning - basically one huge symbol. The characters and events represent something greater than what the story presents at face value. Dante's Inferno is typically thought of as an allegory of Dante's political views. The Harry Potter series has been considered an allegory of the Holy Trinity and the Holocaust.

Question:

What are the basics of a good thesis?

Molly R.
Answer:

A good thesis statement does two things: states the topic and states your position. When you're writing a thesis, you never use first person - no "I think" or "I believe". Simply state it as it is; it's your way or the highway! "Using the technology available on cell phones makes lessons more effective and engaging." is much more powerful than "I think cell phones make lessons more effective and engaging."

Question:

How do I know where the apostrophe goes when showing ownership?

Molly R.
Answer:

When the noun is singular, the apostrophe goes BEFORE the S, as in "I'm going to my friend's house." When the noun is plural, the apostrophe goes AFTER the S, as in "I went to my parents' house." If you have a noun that already means more than one, like children or women, you don't need the S to make it plural. In that case, the apostrophe would go BEFORE the S - children's toys or women's shoes.
